The only thing I can really access at the library here in Richmond is Livejournal, so why not an update on here after 6 weeks? The weird thing is that I could access everything but my e-mail at the Library of Virginia by the Capitol (which has an awesome Edgar Allen Poe exhibit going on right now). I updated my Google map of the trip and I'm nearing 17,000 miles traveled now. If you're interested in checking it out, go to Google Maps, and type in "Fifty-Two Friends Journey" and it's up to six pages of maps now so you'll have to skip ahead a little bit. I got an interview aired of me and the trip during "Morning Edition" on WUKY out of Lexington and it looks like I'll have some other things coming up such as a video interview for CltBlog out of Charlotte, NC.

I wandered all over downtown Richmond today and I'm gearing up for another full day of exploration tomorrow. I actually went to bed by midnight, which is huge for me, especially with how bad this last bus ride threw off my schedule. I have the trip completely booked and I'll be going to Oxford, NC next and then Charlotte, Asheville, Knoxville, Atlanta, Savannah, Gainesville, West Palm Beach, Key West, and then just south of Tampa before returning to St. Pete on January 1st. I've been posting a lot of video as of late on http://www.facebook.com/joshcomics and all of the photos are up there except the past month's. I also have things on http://www.myspace.com/fiftytwofriends , http://www.youtube.com/fiftytwofriends , and http://www.twitter.com/fiftytwofriends .

So, another 3,000 miles is ahead of me as I slowly work my way back to and then through Florida over the next ten weeks.

I'm outside sitting on the steps in Arlington, VA typing about my trip. I only have 110 more days left and I'm completely behind on everything. My journal is missing some entries over the past couple weeks so that's my first priority. I've got a bunch of art I need to ink and paint and then hopefully sell some of it. I need to make some art for people who have been so nice in donating money and I also need to send out some things people bought. I did send out press releases everywhere today, though, and managed to go bikeriding AND grocery shopping. I hope I get to see everyone in the D.C. area because I know some pretty cool people. How am I already on Week #37 of the trip? I have to go hole up at a library and work on the 'zines. I'm two months behind on posting more photos, too - yeesh! Oh well, it's such a fun adventure.

Robert Moses had the Central Park Zoo built for Al Smith--the former governor, and president of the Empire State Building--who lived near the park on the Upper East Side. Moses gave Smith a night key, and the elderly former king of Irish New York would go down to the Central Park Zoo by himself to talk to the animals. Smith loved to spend hours in the zoo after hours, "and he would switch on the lights as he entered each one, to the surprise of its occupants, and talk softly to them...And if one of the zoo’s less dangerous animals was sick or injured, Smith would enter its cage and stand for a while stroking its head and commiserating with it.” [Caro, 382]

So, I'm sitting here in Rusel's room on the last night of my extended stay in Saginaw, MI, where I was born and raised. I get driven down to Flint tomorrow, get on a bus to Battle Creek and then take a train to Chicago. I've had a very memorable and enjoyable time here in Saginaw, with getting to see almost everyone I wanted to and getting to do all the things I had in mind. It's been an extremely emotional time here and I'm finally ready to start with the second half of my trip, as I always planned Saginaw to be my time to get rested and now it's going to be pretty hectic as things continue to fly by. I didn't get any 'zine material completed here but I will in Chicago; that's my number one priority. I caved and bought a laptop backpack because I needed to consolidate and now I'm finally going to be traveling with only two bags and not the four when I started and the three I've had since I left Seattle.

I'm in Marquette, Michigan and I woke up today to it snowing. I had not actually been outside when it was snowing in years (the only time on this trip was being in a bus as it snowed going through Snoqualmie Pass) so I decided to change that. I threw on my clothes and filmed myself in the snow and I put one of the videos up on Facebook. I'm currently at the library and trying to get some things caught up but I need to realize I'm never going to be completely caught up with things on this trip until probably about 2 years after it's done. I was on the news several times yesterday in a story about my trip and I got to see it after Karen and I took a short jaunt to Ishpeming to Da Yooopers Tourist Trap and then grocery shopping. I really can't believe that I'll be in Saginaw in five days.

I can't believe that, out of everywhere that I've gone so far, that Wisconsin would be the most adventurous so far. Since getting picked up in Minneapolis on Friday, I've been between 500-600 miles around central western WI. I gave a talk at the senior center today and then got whisked off by one of the women from there on a trek to The Devil's Punchbowl, outside Irvington. I did an hour and a half interview for the American Council for the Blind Internet radio, and it was excellent and I got to talk about a lot of stuff pertaining to my trip that I hadn't had the chance to yet. I walked into the newspaper here in Durand yesterday and the editor ended up interviewing me. I just got my Marquette, MI stay confirmed and I have TV and newspaper interviews lined up and I'm also going to be giving a talk to at-risk youth about the trip, 'zines, and comics. I also have TV and newspaper interviews lined up for Saginaw, which will make my family happy. I'm sure no one cares about this but I'm writing it down so I can keep track of things a little better.

(The Grand Rapids stay might turn into another week in Saginaw and the second Chicago one will be easy to take care of).

I wish I had more time to write things on here, especially of my trip, but that's just the way it is. Things will never be the same. I just did a radio interview on 97X out of Davenport, IA. I'm doing an interview tomorrow for the American Council for the Blind at: http://www.acbradio.org, something possibly for TV in Marquette, MI next week, and newspaper/TV interviews lined up for Saginaw when I get there.

I'm currently in Durand, WI, a town of about 2,000 people and then I head to Marquette on Friday, without a place completely confirmed at the moment. In the past few days, I went to my first rugby tournament, a goat farm, Crystal Cave, and a billion random spots between Minneapolis and southwestern Wisconsin. I'm really looking forward to getting to Saginaw and seeing my friends and family. I keep forgetting at how soon I'll be there because I've been trying to work on things but I'm going to be arriving in 9 days. My friend Melanie is driving all the way up to the U.P. to get me since there was no bus route from Marquette to Saginaw. I'm in Pepin County (smallest county in the state), where Laura Ingalls Wilder was born and based the first "Little House" book. Today, I'm going to go explore Durand and I believe we're going to Porcupine, WI.

For most of the places not confirmed, I have offers. It's now just a matter of getting everything confirmed. The only ones I really can think of right now that I need are stays in:

    1. Marquette, MI
    2. Anywhere between Cleveland and Burlington (upstate New York?)
    3. Anywhere in Maine
    4. Anywhere around Atlanta

I might have a place to stay with a couple from Couch Surfing in Marquette, but the one response I've gotten from people on there is that a week is just way too long for me to stay with them. I have yet to stay with someone from CS but I've met some really nice people who are members.
